Healthier Somerset: Somerset County ranked third healthiest in state

Somerset County has retained its position as the third healthiest county in the State of New Jersey, according to the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, a collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute (UWPHI) that compares counties within each state on more than 30 health-influencing factors.

While ranking third overall, Somerset County ranked first in healthy behaviors, which is significant for Healthier Somerset, a community-based collation who’s aim is to improve the health and well-being of all who live and work in Somerset County.

“The ranking for Somerset County reflects how bringing together multiple organizations to collaborate, as seen with Healthier Somerset, can result in a greater positive impact,” said Serena Collado, director of community health and convener of Healthier Somerset.

“Through our coalition, we continuously strive to make Somerset County one of the healthiest counties in New Jersey by encouraging active participation in good health habits, increasing access to choices that promote healthy lifestyles, and promoting policy changes that improve health," she said.

“It is wonderful for Somerset County to receive this recognition,” said Patricia Walsh, Somerset County Freeholder. “The health and wellness of a community has a direct impact on the quality of life for those who live, work and visit. This ranking is a testament to the multiple health and wellness resources that Somerset County has to offer.“

Mike Kerwin, president of the Somerset County Business Partnership, highlighted the relevance of this ranking for the business community. There is a direct connection between the economic success of a community and the health of a community,” explained Kerwin. “Being ranked the third healthiest county in the state offers us a competitive advantage for attracting and retaining employers in Somerset County. With the partnerships fostered though Healthier Somerset, we are able to ensure that the health and wellness remains a focus for the community.”
